John 16:33 (NLT)
“I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world.”
Do you have peace? Real peace comes through Jesus and that is not hyper-spiritual lip service. Peace can be obtained through Jesus as a Biblical promise. However, trials and sorrows are often easier to identify. The reality is you and I are going to have trials and sorrows. You may even be in the middle of a trial or sorrow as you are reading this.
Jesus promises to give us peace. He doesn’t promise to take away the trial and sorrow, He does promise to give us His presence resulting in His peace. How can Jesus make such an audacious promise? He tells us to take heart, He has overcome the world. There is an interesting sentence for you. Through trials and sorrows the enemy attempts to deceive us so that our heart wanders.
In the hymn “Come Thou Fount” the composer puts this process into prose. “Prone to wander Lord I feel it, prone to leave the God I love. Here’s my heart Lord take and seal it, seal it for thy courts above.”
It is natural for our hearts to wander away from the peace of God in the midst of trials and sorrows. Take heart, Jesus promises to give you peace, because He has overcome this world.
Today’s Promise: God promises to give me peace because he has already overcome the sorrows and trials of this world for me.
