Day 13

Apr 20, 2024

27 But Jesus spoke to them at once. “Don’t be afraid,” he said. “Take courage. I am here![b]”

28 Then Peter called to him, “Lord, if it’s really you, tell me to come to you, walking on the water.” 29 “Yes, come,” Jesus said. So Peter went over the side of the boat and walked on the water toward Jesus. 30 But when he saw the strong wind and the waves, he was terrified and began to sink. “Save me, Lord!” he shouted. 31 Jesus immediately reached out and grabbed him. “You have so little faith,” Jesus said. “Why did you doubt me?” Matthew 14:27-31 NLT

Peter can get a bad reputation at times. Can you imagine Peter’s job resume?

Name: Simon Peter, aka The Rock, not Johnson

Skills: Handling criticism – previous employer told me, “Get behind me, Satan.”

Swordsmanship – cut off a guy’s ear. He tried to arrest my friend

Most of us are not hiring that guy. We might want him in a fight, but he is not working at our company. But why is the fact that Peter is 1 of 2 people to ever walk on water forgotten so quickly?

If I were to guess, we forget this fact because we’re so used to focusing on the negative part of the account, he sank, that we forget the positive part. He walked on water.

We generally see faith and doubt as opposites when they’re opposite sides of the same coin. Faith is trust and reliance, even in the face of doubt. Faith doesn’t mean we won’t have doubts. It means when we have them, we lean into our belief system that says, “Jesus is true and faithful. Jesus has never failed. Jesus doesn’t always work on my timeline, no matter how much I want Him to. Jesus doesn’t always answer my prayers how I’d like or work in ways I think are best, but He always works things together for the good of those who love Him and are called according to His purpose. Jesus is always working on my behalf, even when I don’t see it.”

We take those things to be factual. Doubt isn’t about the questions we have about hardship or why there is a delay. Doubt is about us taking our eyes off of Jesus while asking those questions. We’re called to be committed to what He’s called us to, and reminding ourselves of truth.

Reflection:

What are the doubts you face when it comes to the Lord? What would you say your first “walk on water moment” was? What do you think the Lord is speaking for your next “walk on water moment?”
